Where minarets, church spires and Austro-Hungarian facades share the same street. Sarajevo's bazaar, Mostar's arched bridge over the green Neretva, emerald rafting rivers and Dinaric peaks — one of Europe's cheapest and least-crowded countries.

Practical information

Currency

Convertible Mark (KM, BAM) — pegged to the euro

Languages

Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, English common with younger people

Time zone

CET (UTC+1), CEST (UTC+2) in summer

Emergency

112 (general), 122 police, 124 ambulance, 123 fire

Internet

Fast, cheap mobile data; free Wi-Fi in most cafés, hostels and bus stations.

SIM cards

BH Telecom, m:tel or HT Eronet prepaid — cheap with your passport. Bosnia is NOT in the EU, so EU roaming does not apply.

Getting around

Buses are the backbone and reach almost everywhere, though schedules thin out on Sundays; the rail network is minimal and slow. The Sarajevo–Mostar train is a scenic exception worth taking. A rental car is best for the mountains and the stećci sites, but note that Bosnia and Republika Srpska issue separate vignettes and paperwork — check the rental terms.

Visa details

Indian passport holders normally need a visa, but entry is visa-free if you hold a valid, previously used multiple-entry Schengen, US or UK visa. Confirm the current rule with the embassy before booking — it has changed more than once.

Etiquette

  • Accept the offered coffee — the Bosnian coffee ritual is unhurried and social
  • Remove your shoes when entering a home
  • Dress modestly inside mosques, churches and monasteries
  • Let hosts raise the 1990s war and ethnic politics; don't open with it

Packing suggestions

  • Layers — mountain evenings are cold even in summer
  • Sturdy shoes for cobbled old towns and hill trails
  • A scarf or shawl for mosque visits
  • Cash in KM; Type C/F adapter

Travel tips

  • Landmines from the 1990s still exist in some rural areas — never leave marked paths or enter fenced or signed land
  • Carry cash in KM; smaller towns and buses often refuse cards
  • Mostar empties beautifully after the day-trip coaches leave — stay the night
  • Sarajevo to Mostar by train is one of Europe's great cheap scenic rides
  • Bosnia and Republika Srpska feel like two systems for buses and paperwork — allow extra time
