Overview

Town, monastery complex and Christian pilgrimage center in Late Antique Egypt. WHS#90. It sits on the Mediterranean coast, mildest and greenest between autumn and spring.

Why visit: Memphis, Saqqara, Amarna and Abydos — the settlements and necropolises where Egyptology as a discipline was built.

Things to do
  • ›Take a guide — most of these sites have almost no interpretive signage
  • ›Wear a hat and carry water; there is rarely any shade
  • ›Visit the site museum first if there is one
  • ›Allow for rough, uneven ground and loose sand
