Amber Fort

Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

4.7 (0)
Overview

A honey-hued bastion cascading down the Aravalli ridge above Maota Lake — ramparts, cupolas and courtyards leading to the dazzling Sheesh Mahal, whose thousands of mirrors turn a single candle into a galaxy. Jaipur's crowning Rajput-Mughal masterpiece and part of Rajasthan's UNESCO hill forts.

Why visit: The Sheesh Mahal alone is worth the trip — Rajputana at its most opulent.

History: Begun by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and expanded for 150 years, Amber was the Kachwaha capital before Jai Singh II founded Jaipur in 1727.

Things to do
  • ›Climb (or jeep) up to Suraj Pol and Jaleb Chowk
