Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida

Aparecida, Brazil

4.5 (0)

Overview

Roman Rite Catholic basilica in Aparecida, Brazil. It lies in southeastern Brazil, most comfortable in the dry winter months from June to August.

Why visit: Portuguese baroque in gold leaf and soapstone, and Niemeyer's concrete-and-glass modernism — four centuries apart, both remarkable.

Things to do

›Step inside — the plain exteriors often hide gilded baroque interiors
›Check mass times before visiting as a sightseer
›Dress modestly
›Look for the soapstone prophets and painted ceilings in Minas Gerais
