City Palace Udaipur

Udaipur, Rajasthan, India

4.7 (0)
Overview

Rajasthan's largest palace complex rises in cream-coloured tiers above Lake Pichola — eleven interlinked mahals of mirror-work, miniature paintings, peacock mosaics and balconies framing the Aravallis. Still home to the Mewar royal family, with sunset boat rides to Jag Mandir below.

Why visit: Lake-and-palace romance at its finest — Udaipur's defining landmark.

History: Begun by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1559 when he shifted Mewar's capital from Chittorgarh; 22 successive maharanas added to it over 400 years.
