The queen of Nilgiri hill stations — eucalyptus mists, tea-carpeted slopes, a boating lake and botanical gardens, best reached aboard the UNESCO-listed mountain railway that puffs up through 16 tunnels from Mettupalayam.

History: Developed by John Sullivan from 1819 as the Madras Presidency's summer capital; the rack-railway opened in 1908 and still runs steam on the lower section.
