The 17-m monolithic Gommateshwara (981 CE) standing serene atop Vindhyagiri's bare rock — climbed barefoot up 600 steps, anointed spectacularly every 12 years.

Why visit: One of the world's tallest monolithic statues, and 2,300 years of Jain history.

History: Carved for Ganga minister Chavundaraya; Chandragupta Maurya is said to have died on facing Chandragiri hill.
