Overview

A white-marble dream between Raj and republic — Kolkata's domed memorial rises from 64 acres of gardens, its galleries charting the city's story while the black bronze Angel of Victory pivots on the dome above reflecting pools.

Why visit: Kolkata's most beautiful building, inside and out.

History: Conceived by Curzon on Queen Victoria's death in 1901 and completed in 1921 with Makrana marble; it became a museum of the colonial encounter it commemorates.

  • ›Golden-hour photos across the reflecting pools
