Wadi Elrayan

Faiyum Governorate, Egypt

4.5 (0)

Overview

Nature reserve in Egypt. It lies in Egypt's desert belt, best visited between October and April.

Why visit: Ras Muhammad's reefs, Wadi Al-Hitan's fossil whales and the Sinai mountains — protected landscapes that are nothing like the Nile Valley.

Things to do

›Go with a licensed operator — several reserves require one
›Bring everything you need; there are no shops inside
›Start early for the wildlife and the cooler hours
›Stay on marked tracks; the desert damage from off-roading is permanent
